We’re given little tidbits of the story to make the reader read more.

However, most of the story is just static. I would have DNF’d it around 60% but I read a little more and something became more interesting. So I had no idea how the story would progress. In the process of the main character escaping we find that she’s been trained for something, and that she’s unusually strong. We know that something is trying to slither it’s way into the side of her neck, that she eventually kills. Actually, we find out a lot within the first chapter: she doesn’t know her name, but we know it’s her 12th birthday when she wakes in the coffin. Right when the book starts we find out how old the main character is. What happened at the beginning of this book was tremendously interesting. I was looking forward to reading Alive and not only getting to know the main character, but to read how the story plays out as well.

However, I knew that when I finished reading the synopsis that Alive is a YA Dystopian. I had this huge inkling that Alive wasn’t about vampires, but one could hope! I mean, it’s not everyday you read a book where a character has to bust out of a coffin. I like that there’s mentionings of getting out of a coffin that the main character is stuck in, that’s mentioned in the synopsis. Having read the synopsis though, I genuinely became re-interested in this book. I requested Alive back in ’15 when I first signed up for Netgalley and went a little over board with all the books I had requested. I didn’t think too much of it and then I requested the book. What interested me in Alive the first time I came across this novel was the cover. Or maybe a reality they cannot comprehend lies just beyond the next turn. Maybe there’s a way out, a rational explanation, and a fighting chance against the dangers to come. If she has to lead, she will make sure they survive. Whatever the truth is, she is determined to find it and confront it. Now, if they’re to have any chance, she must get them to trust each other. She is not the biggest among them, or the boldest, but for some reason the others trust her. Savage, which was engraved on the foot of her coffin-yet she finds herself in charge. She knows only one thing about herself-her name, M. Beyond their room lies a corridor filled with bones and dust, but no people. Fighting her way free brings little relief-she discovers only a room lined with caskets and a handful of equally mystified survivors. She has no idea who she is, where she is, or how she got there.
